Department of Macromolecule and Nano-Engineering

About the Department

•Macromolecule and Nano-Engineering Department was recently established (March, 1993) on the national request due to lack of human resources in new organicmaterial field of study.
•This department is formed in the Hybrid-type from the beginning (all of the professors have different backgrounds, and students can choose their majors according to their aptitude and preference).
•All of the students in this department are recommended to continue their studies to a higher level, further than master’s degree either in Korea or abroad, so that all of them can have the career of their interest after graduating.
•The professors in this department have published the highest number of papers that are in the SCI level (more than 10 per professor every year; takes up 1/8 or 12.5% of the total number of papers published from Chonbuk University).
•The department has an excellent stem cell lab which was authenticated by Ministry of Health and Welfare, Ministry of Knowledge Economy, Ministry of Educational Science and Technology, and Ministry of Labor (2005-today).
•The department published research papers on progress in polymer SCI, which is the most reknown academic journal in the macromolecule engineering world, on Nano Letters, which is the most famous academic journal in nano material field, and on Nature, which is one of the top three journals in the world (Professor Kang Kil Sun, Lee Seung Hee, Na Chang Woon, Jung Kwang Woon, Lee Dong Won in 2007).
•The department provides scholarship to the entire graduate students (about 70 students), scholarship and living expenses to 1/4 of junior and senior students in undergraduate school (provides 600,000-1.2 million won per month to graduate students, and scholarship that pays for the entire tuition for juniors and seniors in undergraduate school).
•Finances
- BK-21 project (2006. 3~2013. 2)
- Research study costs for professors
- Junlabukdo Coupling project (business)
- Private patent related incentive
- SCI-level research paper incentive
- Academic-industrial scholarship from Samsung, BOE-HYDIS
- Venture: KCR practice expenses, corporate practice expenses related to the Junlabukdo Coupling project
- personnel expenses for joint research with Chemical research lab, KIST, Catholic Medical School
•The department won the grand prize in Watch 21 academic research paper conference that was hosted by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.
•The department sends out students to overseas and for Post Doc. Programs at Akron, Purdue, JAIST, Iowa, Kyoto, Seoul National University, KwangJoo Institute of Science and Technology, Harvard, Stanford, and University of Science and Technolog.y
- Akron: Park Soo Jung (Ph. D., currently in Post-doc program, 2007), Suh Kwang Soo (Ph.D., 2007)

- Science technology united University: Kim Byung Joo (doctoral degree in 2007, currently in Post Doc)
- Purdue University (USA); Jung Je Gyo (Post Doc. 2006)

•The department produced the professors of famous Chinese universities
- Lee Hyang Dan (2006, doctor of high molecule nano engineering) professor at JoongNam People’s University, China
- Ryoo Yong Ho (2004, doctor of high molecule nano engineering) professor at College of Pharmacy, Zhejiang University, China, and two more professors
•Alumni in various fields of work, including government official.
- Bae Jin Hoon (Grade 6 government official), Hwang Hyun Min (Grade 7 open recruitment), Jung Min Woo (NongHyup)
- Jung Seung Hyun (elementary school teacher, class of 93), Yeo Seung Goo (police officer in Kyunggi province), Yoon Ahn Soon (JinApEup)

•All professors can teach in English (Professor Na Chang Woon, Lee Dong Won, Lee Myung Hoon, Lee Seung Hee, Lee Joong Hee, Jung Kwang Woon); currently teaching 20 classes (including graduate school) in English (1/3 of the total English classes at Chonbuk University).
•Department that has number of professors who work on the international basis including ISO. Lee Jong Hee (ISO member), Kang Gil Sun (ISO member, manager of world tissue engineering association, registered at who’s who in the world), Na Chang Woon (registered at Marquis who's who in the world), Lee Seung Hee (received research funds from BOE-Hydis for pantoscopic LCD patent administration), Jung Kwang Woon (research collaborated by Acron and MIT, USA), Lee Dong Won (research collaborated by Georgia Tech., USA).
•Department provides the entire travelling expenses to the entire graduate school students and the undergraduate students who participate in research studies to go to USA, Portugal, Sydney, China, Japan, and Sweden to present their study papers. The funds are given out once a year (max. 4 times) for the students. (4 study presentation in the overseas per professor on the average, students and their advisory professors go overseas 25 times a year)
•Department won the second and third rank in the competitive exhibition for hydrogen cars (2007)
•Selected as the department with the most excellent research study performance in Chonbuk University (2007)
•Grand prize in studies at Chonbuk University (professor Lee Seung Hee), excellence award (professor Kang Gil Sun) (2007)
•The most honorable fellow in World information display conference (SID) : professor Lee Seung Hee
-selected as a fellow among 6,000 members in the world; only 0.1% of the society can be fellows.
•There are only 3 researchers who were selected as fellows in Korea, and professor Lee Seung Hee is the only one in LCD department.
