Professor Kim Dae-Gon Opened the Door to Invent Cure for Liver Cancer and Cholangiocarcinoma

CBNU's researchers have released the study result on liver cancer and cholangiocarcinoma, which are difficult to cure due to its fast-spread and bad prognosis. This result will be an important step to curing the diseases.


Professor Kim Dae-Gon's team, in division of gastroenterology and cancer molecular lab, has discovered the function and pathway of target molecule, EphA2, which controls progress and metastasis of liver cancer and cholangiocarcinoma, for the world's first.


The result of this study was published in the latest issue of Hepatology (citation index 11.7), which is most respected paper in Hepatology world, under the title "Activation of mTORC1 and Raf/Pyk2 by growth factor-mediated EphA2 is required for cholangiocarcinoma growth and metastasis". This publication has drawn academia's attention around the world.


According to professor Kim's team, once cholangiocarcinoma, which increases its number not only domestically but also globally, is diagnosed as a bad one, it already spreads all over one's body. It is difficult to cure because of its wide-spreadability and lack of effective medicines. So therefore the team conducted the research to find the target molecules, which controls metastasis of liver cancer and cholangiocarcinoma, and to apply the result to find the cure.


From this research professor Kim's team has confirmed that if EphA2's manifestation is high between cancer tissue and cancer cell, the cancer progresses faster. The research team, via cell line experiments, has found that manifestation of EphA2 hinders cell function and growth which lead to the activation of signal of mTORC1 and Raf/Pyk2, molecules known for cancer development and metastasis. The team has also found, via animal testing, lowering manifestation of EphA2 has an effect on regulating cancer development and metastasis.


Based on this research, Professor Kim's team continues to develop a anticancer medicine, made up of small molecule materials, which blocks EphA2 target molecule and its path.


Professor Kim said, "It is significant that we have identified the invasiveness and transfer mechanism for hepatocellular carcinoma and cholangiocarcinoma, and the target molecule, which could be applied to a diagnosis and a development of cure, and its signal pathway. Through this research, we expect a development of metastasis control drug for cholangiocarcinoma patients and of cure by using signal blocking agent.
